How to Win the CDP A-List: A Step-by-Step Preparation Guide

What is the CDP A-List?
The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is the world's most influential environmental disclosure platform, used by over 740 institutional investors managing more than US$136 trillion in assets to assess corporate climate, water, and forests performance. In 2025, over 22,100 companies disclosed through CDP globally; only 877 earned an A score, and just 23 achieved Triple A (Climate + Water + Forests) — representing less than 4% of disclosing companies.
Why the CDP A-List Matters for UAE and GCC Enterprises
Beyond recognition, an A-List score translates directly into business outcomes. CSRD-reporting EU buyers increasingly require CDP-verified supplier data. Green finance instruments reference CDP scores as eligibility criteria. EU procurement frameworks use CDP ratings as a vendor qualification filter.
For GCC companies navigating CBAM, CSRD value-chain data requests, and domestic UAE/KSA ESG mandates, a CDP A-List is rapidly becoming table stakes for European market access and investor engagement.
The Four-Tier Scoring Architecture
The Six Essential Criteria for A-List Status
All six criteria must be satisfied simultaneously. Missing even one prevents an A score regardless of overall marks.
A public, credible transition plan covering decarbonisation levers, financial planning, and a pathway to net zero aligned with a 1.5°C scenario.
An SBTi-validated Scope 1 and Scope 2 target, or a demonstrably 1.5°C-aligned reduction commitment with evidence of progress.
Independent verification of all Scope 1, Scope 2, and material Scope 3 emissions by a qualified verifier (aligned with ISO 14064-3 or equivalent).
Active supplier and customer engagement programmes with documented management efforts and measurable outcomes.
Climate-related performance metrics formally linked to executive and/or management remuneration.
ESG/climate data published in mainstream financial reports with year-on-year progress tracked against stated goals.
Step-by-Step Preparation Roadmap
Begin with a full mock-score against the current CDP Climate questionnaire using CDP's published Scoring Methodology and Essential Criteria documents. Map every question against your current data availability, identifying gaps at each tier. Prioritise by scoring weight — CDP publishes Category Weighting documents annually.
Build or upgrade your GHG inventory system to capture all fifteen Scope 3 categories. Engage an accredited verification body (ISO 14064-3 / ISO 14065 compliant) for limited assurance of Scope 1 and 2 in Year 1, progressing to reasonable assurance and Scope 3 verification ahead of your target disclosure year.
Submit a near-term SBT to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) covering Scope 1 and Scope 2, and develop a long-term net-zero target. Draft a 1.5°C-aligned transition plan covering capital expenditure plans, operational decarbonisation levers, and a timeline to net zero.
Formalise board-level oversight of climate risk. Ensure at least one board committee has a formal climate mandate. Link at least one quantitative climate metric — Scope 1 emissions intensity reduction, CDP score progress, or SBT milestone achievement — to executive remuneration.
Complete the full questionnaire with no blank mandatory fields. For multi-row questions, always lead with your strongest, most quantified row. Tailor open-text responses specifically to each environmental issue. Review every response against the Essential Criteria checklist before submission.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Unverified Scope 3 data — the most frequent A-List disqualifier. Plan your verification timeline 6–9 months before submission.
Targets without SBTi validation or a clear 1.5°C methodology are routinely downgraded by CDP assessors.
Executive incentive disclosures must be specific and quantitative — a general reference to "sustainability performance" without a defined metric will not satisfy the criterion.
Late submission automatically caps scores regardless of quality — register early and submit before the CDP deadline.
